Not at all! Our calligraphy and lettering workbooks are designed for all levels, from complete beginners to intermediate calligraphers. Each book includes guided exercises that start with basic strokes and progress to full alphabets, numbers and punctuation. Your current handwriting quality doesn't matter — calligraphy is a completely different skill that anyone can learn with practice.
For our Comics Lettering workbooks, any fine-tip pen, felt-tip marker or brush pen works great. For the cursive and calligraphy workbooks (Beach, Western, Drift), we recommend brush pens like the Tombow Fudenosuke for best results. Use smooth paper (like marker paper or the book itself) to protect your pens and get clean, crisp lines.
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing using specific tools and strokes — typically with thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes. Hand lettering is drawing letters as artwork, where each letter is "designed" rather than written. Cursive is connected handwriting. Our workbooks cover all three: comics lettering (hand lettering), cursive styles (Western, Drift) and calligraphy (Beach Premium).
Our workbooks are primarily designed for adults and teens (ages 13+). The guided exercises require fine motor skills and patience. However, older children with an interest in art and lettering can enjoy the Comics Lettering volumes, which feature bold, fun styles that are more forgiving for younger hands.
